A two-time All-Star, three-time Golden Glove award winner and MLB champion (2003), first baseman Derrek Lee built his reputation on exceptional fielding and formidable power at the plate. Endearing himself to fans through his play and contributions to the community, Lee spent his 15-year career with four different MLB clubs: Florida Marlins (1998-2003), Chicago Cubs (2004-2010), Baltimore Orioles (2011) and Pittsburgh Pirates (2011). In 2005 -- one of the most memorable of his career -- Lee won the Silver Slugger Award and the National League batting title and was a finalist for the National League MVP award. After his daughter was diagnosed with Leber's Congenital Amaurosis (LCA), a degenerative disease that leads to blindness, Lee founded Project 3000 to raise money for research. Even after his daughter turned out to be misdiagnosed, Lee continued his fundraising efforts, and, to date, has raised more than a million dollars for those suffering from LCA. In 2007, for his involvement with Project 3000, Lee was honored with the Cubs' Roberto Clemente award, given annually to players who combine outstanding skills on the field with devoted work in the community. Lee's career began when he decided to forego a scholarship to play basketball at North Carolina and was selected out of high school by San Diego Padres with the 14th overall pick.
