An MLB All-Star in 2010, Atlanta Braves right fielder Jason Heyward is widely recognized as one of baseball's brightest young stars. An exciting power hitter, the 6'5" standout hit a home run in his first major league at-bat in 2010 and opened 2011 the same way, becoming only the second player in major league history to hit a home run in his first opening day at-bat for two consecutive years. A native of Ridgewood, NJ, he recorded a remarkable rookie season: earning an All-Star selection; receiving MLB Rookie of the Month Honors in both April and May; finishing second in the Rookie of the Year voting; and being named Baseball America Rookie of the Year, as well as securing an outfield spot on Baseball America's 2010 All-Rookie Team and on the 2010 Topps Major League Rookie All-Star Team. His sophomore season he continued to deliver for the Braves, driving in 42 runs on 90 hits. Selected 14th overall by Atlanta in the 2007 MLB Draft, Heyward began his pro career at age 17, first with the GCL Braves and then with the Danville Braves of the Appalachian League. Promoted to AA Mississippi and then AAA Gwinnett, he was named the Minor League Player of the Year by Baseball America and USA Today before making his MLB debut in 2010. Heyward is also an ambassador for L.E.A.D., an Atlanta-based non-profit organization that strives to positively impact inner-city student athletes.
