Bio
Alex Atkins brings over 15 years of coaching experience to his second season as Offensive Coordinator and his fourth season on staff at FSU. Despite the added challenge of COVID-19 in his first season, Atkins has led the offensive line to continued improvement year after year. Atkins has coached multiple players to All-Conference and All-American honors in each of his first two seasons after coaching the Seminoles to a Top-20 rushing offense in 2020. In 2021, Atkins led multiple Seminole offensive linemen to All-ACC Honors. In his first season as Offensive Coordinator, Atkins led the top overall offense in the ACC with 484.2 ypg. The Seminoles also led the league in rushing yards (2,783), rushing yards per game (214.1), and rushing touchdowns (33). Atkins’ Seminoles begin the 2023 season ranked No. 3 in the nation and are poised to continue building on their 2022 success with the addition of multiple top-ranked recruits and transfers to complete the offense.
Under Atkins, the Seminoles have seen record-setting success both on the field and in recruiting. Atkins’ work in recruiting earned him a No. 3 ranking across all ACC coaches for his work on the 2022 class, and a No. 7 overall ranking for the 2023 class. The 2023 class marks the first time since 2006 where the Seminoles have signed multiple offensive lineman rated four stars or higher in back-to-back classes, due in large part to Atkins’ honesty and relationship building throughout the recruiting process.
On the field, Atkins’ 2022 offense improved in nearly every category, finishing the season ranked No. 10 overall with an 8.5 point improvement in points per game, and a 104.9 yard improvement in yards per game. In 2021, Atkins’ offensive line converted 32 consecutive Red Zone trips into points, setting the record for the longest active streak in the nation going into the 2022 season. In 2020, Atkins led a line that blocked for a Top-20 rushing offense, averaging 199.9 rushing yards per game. This marked the Seminoles highest rushing average since 2016, including the team’s first game since 2016 with at least 250 yards rushing and passing in a single game.
In addition to leading teams to record-setting success, Atkins has consistently helped teams improve on the offensive side of the ball. In his first season at Tulane, Atkins helped the Green Wave to the NCAA’s 26th best rushing attack averaging 228.1 yards per game, after finishing the 2015 season ranked 118th with only 115.8 rushing yards per game. The following season, the improvements continued as Tulane finished 20th in the nation with an offense that averaged 231.5 rushing yards per game. After inheriting a Tulane team coming off a 3-9 season in 2015, Coach Atkins helped the Green Wave improve each year, culminating in a 41-24 victory over Louisiana in the the Cure Bowl in 2018.
