Bio

Bill Clark has over 30 years of coaching experience, with the greater portion of his career spent at UAB building a successful program. Clark has an overall record of 60-30 as a Division I head coach with a 49-26 record at UAB since taking over the Blazers program in 2014. Clark led the Blazers to unprecedented success in his seven years as head coach, including winning the program’s first Conference USA Championship in 2018, followed by a Championship title in 2020, and a C-USA record three straight C-USA West Divisional titles (2018-2020). The Blazers ended the 2021 season with a 9-4 record and defeated their highest ranked opponent in program history. Under Clark’s leadership, the Blazers set a new school wins record with eight wins in 2017 before shattering that record just one year later with eleven wins in 2018. That year, the Blazers won their first C-USA Championship and became the first team in league history to win a conference title game on the road.

In 2015 and 2016, Clark reconstructed a team from scratch, and when UAB returned to FBS competition in 2017 after two years away, he guided the Blazers to an 8-5 overall record and the team’s first bowl appearance since 2004. In Clark’s first season as head coach of the Blazers in 2014, he turned around a program that was 2-10 the year before into a team that finished 6-6 and earned bowl eligibility for the first time since 2004.

Prior to UAB, Clark was the Head Coach at Jacksonville State in 2013 where he led the Gamecocks to an 11-4 record, marking the most victories in a season since 1992. That number set an Ohio Valley Conference record and was also the most wins by a first-year head coach. JSU concluded the 2013 season ranked No. 10 in the final FCS poll. The Gamecocks, who ranked No. 6 in the nation in FCS attendance, set 49 school records in 2013 and broke 13 OVC marks, as well as 3 NCAA records.

Known as a defensive minded coach, Clark’s defense paved the way for UAB’s success helping the Blazers finish in the Top-20 nationally in total defense each of the last four seasons, including Top-10 finishes in 2018, 2019, and 2020. Additionally, UAB has been extraordinary in third down situations, finishing second nationally in third down defense in 2018 (.260), third nationally in 2019 (.283), and seventh in 2020 (.298).
