Bio

Chad Wilt comes to Michigan State in 2024 for his first season as Co-Special Teams Coordinator/Rush Ends coach after two seasons at the University of Indiana. Chad Wilt joined the Hoosiers in 2020 and spent two seasons leading the Indiana defense. 3 of his 6 linebackers finished in the Top 6 on the team in tackles last season, including Kansas City Chiefs free-agent signee Cam Jones, who posted 55 tackles (T-5th) in just five games. In two years at Minnesota, Wilt led a defense that finished 3rd nationally in total defense, 6th in scoring defense, 8th in rushing defense, and 8th in passing defense. In his lone season at the University of Cincinati, he led the defense to record 31 sacks and 96 tackles for loss finishing at the top of the conference in total defense. Wilt has also spent time at Army and Maryland, where he coached some of the best defenses in each program’s history. During his time at Army, Wilt guided the team to a record of 29-10. They recorded three wins over Navy and took home a pair of Commander in Chief’s trophies. Army finished 2018 at No. 19 in the AP poll behind a program-record 11 wins. Army led the nation in third down conversion percentage and finished 8th in total defense, and 8th in scoring defense. At Maryland, Wilt coached a defenseive line that accounted for 31.5 of the team’s 35 sacks, ranking 14th in the country.

At every stop, Coach Wilt has focused on player development to ensure that each of his players is able to maximize their potential on and off the field. At Minnesota, Wilt coached Boye Mafe, who tied for 6th in the Big Ten in sacks and was selected in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Under Wilt’s guidance at the University of Maryland, Yannick Ngakoue was a First-Team All-Big Ten honoree and a fifth-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. In 2014, he tutored Andre Monroe, who finished with 10.5 sacks that season and left as Maryland’s all-time sacks leader with 25. During his tenure at Ball State, Wilt also developed Jonathon Newsome into an All-Mid-American Conference First Team selection in 2013.
